Lunch With Maria
We never had anything much to say
No qualification breached our silence.
Unjustified, returning everyday,
We kept up our inseparable pretence.
No common ground to cover, no divide
To talk around, no subjects to avoid
Just company, away from where routines reside
And time, where rivalry is not employed
An hour each day unmonitored, unchecked
For usefulness or measurable worth.
The non judgemental little we expect
The unconditional least that we deserve
Some lonely nights our wired paths would cross
Our disparate scenes converge and provide
Something to say at last, ‘This is my boss’
You’d roar, with (all) the absurdity (which that) implied
Today we will revisit the oblique
Relax in the salutation of restraint
To Bloody Mary, Bubble and Squeak,
The silence we so comfortably maintained
